How you can win the local search battle

According to a recent study of small businesses conducted by Streetfight Magazine, about 1/4 of businesses said that they needed help  with search optimization.    While search optimization is indeed important, most business owners may lack a full understanding what it is and how much it can help improve business.

So just what is Search Engine Optimization(SEO)?

I heard a great quote at a conference last year that nails that definition "SEO is what happens when you do everything else well"

Instead of looking to a checklist of tags, meta tags, and links focused on SEO,  a marketer for a Tucson business seeking to improve website performance should focus on:

1) Accurately and quickly presenting the information your customers want to see in a format that is easily readable on any device.

2) Adding relevant content/downloads/article to the site that help the potential customer learn about your business or industry and help them make better decisions.

3) Make sure your phone, address, website and email are accurate on popular directories relevant to your industry (Google, Yelp, Yellowpages).

4) Focus on why you want a person to visit your website.  If the website does not have ecommerce, then the goal could be a phone call or store visit.

Probably 75% of local businesses can do all of this on a 1 page website.

Why?

Because 1-page websites force you to think about only items 1-4 above.  Much like the 140 character limit for Twitter and text messages, the limitation improves content.  Instead of filling pages with image galleries and detailed service/product descriptions, you are forced to pick the best photos and the clearest description of your services.
